Multiple sources of variation → variation within and between group

$$\text{Var}(Y)=E(\text{Var}(Y|X))+\text{Var}(E(Y|X))$$ $$a+b=c$$

i.e. the (weighted average of) variation within group + variance between group

Also know as the law of total variance.
