# Innovation
- *Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm*, Henry Chesborough
- Claudia Kotchka at P&G
- **User centric** through a deep understanding of user habits, and needs physical and emotional.
- **Collaborative.** Never work alone. There is no one right answer, so it's not cheating to share information.
- **Abductive.** Start with prototype solution and test it. Learn backwards and logic the way to explain the result.
- **Experimental.** Prototype with visual and tangible models. It's easier to discuss something you can see. It’s not the solution, but first of a continuous series, if possible solutions. The second version can be radically different.
## Closed vs Open Innovation
- Closed Innovation
- Positive
- Creates fortified castles
- Negative
- Dusty shelves of ideas
- Frustrated inventors
- Open [[stage-gate|Gate Reviews]]
- **Closed Evaluation Criterion:** Standard measurements... customer needs; feasibility; specification conformance; cost; schedule etc.
- **Open Evaluation Criterion:**
- Look for new ideas, technology, concepts from outside
- Move out ideas: spin-offs, licenses, technology sales
- Self Reflection
- What new [[advantage|core competencies]] do we need
- What new [[business-model|business models]] should we pursue
